Alexandria, Virginia is in northern VA immediately south of WAshington, D.C. It abuts the Potomac river and has a historic district that dates back to colonial times.

Well, the obvious answer is, "It's in Virginia"...Sorry, I don't mean to be a smart aleck!
So, really, it's on the eastern coast of the U.S., very close to Washington, D.C.
